2.1.2 The role of potassium cryolite in the grinding wheel


Since the beginning of the 21st century, industrial developed countries such as the United States, Japan, and Western European countries have gradually replaced the conventional cryolite with potassium cryolite (KAlF4), and the replacement work has almost been completed. However, until 2011, about 80% of China's grinding wheel manufacturers still use conventional cryolite. Only a small number of companies have begun to replace conventional soda cryolite with potassium cryolite. A few companies have begun to use a mixture of these two cryolites. In addition to the above advantages, potassium cryolite is used instead of conventional cryolite.

2.2 Flux for aluminum smelting containing cryolite


In the smelting process of aluminum and aluminum alloy, in order to prevent the oxidation of the melt and the removal of inclusions, the purpose is often achieved by adding a flux, the former is to spray a layer of flux called a covering agent on the surface of the melt, after melting Forming a dense liquid layer with a certain thickness to prevent the infiltration of oxygen, thereby preventing oxidation of aluminum and significantly reducing the burning of aluminum; the latter is to add a certain amount of refining agent to the melt, which can make inclusions For example, Al2O3 is separated from the aluminum melt and floated on the melt to form slag to be removed, and can adsorb a certain amount of hydrogen in the melt, so the refining agent has the dual function of removing impurities and dehydrogenation. The coatings and refining agents for aluminum and aluminum alloy melts are mostly composed of chloride salts and fluoride salts, some of which also contain cryolite (Na3AlF6) but do not contain potassium cryolite (KAlF4) because of its high price. Due to the presence of cryolite, the interfacial tension between the aluminum melt and the flux increases, the volatility and hygroscopicity of the flux decrease, the cover layer becomes denser, and has a certain refining ability, so that it has coverage and separation. The comprehensive process performance of refining is widely used in all aluminum and aluminum alloys except aluminum alloys with high magnesium content. In principle, the cryolite in the flux can be replaced by potassium cryolite (KAlF4), and better coverage and refining effect can be achieved, but the price of potassium cryolite is high, so it is better to use potassium cryolite from the perspective of cost performance. . Generally, the melting ability of the chloride salt to alumina is not large, and is 1% to 2%. If the cryolite is added, the solubility of the flux to the alumina is greatly enhanced.


2.3 Other uses


In addition to some of the above uses, potassium cryolite has an important use in steel smelting and glass and ceramic production.
