2.1 Main auxiliary materials for grinding wheels


Grinding wheels are indispensable tools in industrial production and are referred to as “industrial teeth” and are widely used in all walks of life. The grinding wheel is a complex system composed of a variety of main and auxiliary raw materials. The main materials are abrasives and binders, and the auxiliary materials include fillers and reinforcing materials.


2.1.1 The role of cryolite in the grinding wheel


In the production of modern grinding wheel, cryolite (Na3AlF6) has been widely added as an auxiliary material, and it has become an essential material. Its function can be summarized as: corundum silicon carbide diamond grinding wheel abrasive abrasive saw abrasive cloth belt


1. Improve the adhesion of the bonding agent. The abrasive in the grinding wheel is bonded together by the bonding agent. The commonly used bonding agent is resin, and its quality plays an important role in the performance of the grinding wheel. Here, urotropine [(CH2)6N4] is added as a hardener for the resin.


2. Effectively reduce the grinding surface temperature and oxidation degree. Because cryolite has a low melting point and melts under the action of grinding heat, it needs to absorb the grinding heat, and at the same time, it causes the abrasive particles to fall off due to melting, thereby preventing the grinding wheel from being clogged.


3. Reduce the burn area of the cut. Due to the melting of the cryolite, heat is absorbed, and the grinding temperature is lowered, so that the burned area of the cut and the grounded part is reduced.


4. Improve cutting and grinding speed. Cryolite melts into a liquid state, which is a good lubricant and the cutting speed can be increased.


5. In the grinding process, after the cryolite is melted, it can be decomposed and precipitated fluorine, which is beneficial to the grinding and cutting of the steel. Therefore, the cryolite is particularly suitable for the dry grinding wheel without the coolant.


6. The life of the grinding wheel is extended. The combined effect of the above acts of cryolite in the grinding wheel is that the effective service life of the grinding wheel is prolonged and the production cost is also reduced.
